How it's calculated

Atal Pension Yojana is a government-guaranteed pension scheme for workers in the unorganised sector, run by PFRDA. You pay a fixed monthly amount until you turn 60 — set by your joining age and the pension you choose — and receive ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 a month for life from 60. After you, your spouse gets the same pension, and after both, your nominee receives the accumulated corpus (₹1.7 lakh for a ₹1,000 pension up to ₹8.5 lakh for ₹5,000).

Example: joining at 25 for a ₹5,000 pension costs ₹376 a month for 35 years — ₹1,57,920 in all. At 6% inflation, though, ₹5,000 at age 60 buys only about ₹651 in today's money.

Contribution amounts come from the official PFRDA chart for monthly payment; quarterly and half-yearly modes use slightly different amounts. Since 1 October 2022, anyone who is or has been an income-tax payer can't join. The pension is a fixed rupee amount, so its real value falls with inflation — the "today's money" figure uses the inflation rate you set.

Frequently asked questions

Who can join the Atal Pension Yojana?
Any Indian citizen aged 18 to 40 with a savings account at a bank or post office, provided they are not (and have not been) an income-tax payer — a rule in force since 1 October 2022. The contribution is auto-debited from your account each month.
What happens if I stop paying contributions?
Missed instalments attract a small penalty. If payments stay unpaid, the account is frozen after 6 months, deactivated after 12 months and closed after 24 months, and the balance is returned. Check current rules with your bank before relying on this.
Is a ₹5,000 APY pension enough to retire on?
On its own, no. The pension is a fixed rupee amount, so inflation erodes it — at 6% it is worth about ₹871 in today's money for someone joining at 30. APY works best as a guaranteed floor alongside the NPS, EPF or SIPs — see the retirement calculator for the full picture.
