How it's calculated
Under the old tax regime you can deduct certain investments and premiums from your taxable income. Each section has its own ceiling, and you only get the deduction up to that limit:
- Section 80C: up to ₹1.5 lakh in total across EPF, PPF, ELSS, life insurance, NSC, tax-saver FDs, tuition fees and home-loan principal.
- Section 80CCD(1B): a separate ₹50,000 for your own NPS contribution, over and above 80C.
- Section 80D: health-insurance premiums, up to ₹25,000 for yourself and family (₹50,000 if the oldest insured is 60 or above), plus the same for your parents.
The tax saved is the total deduction multiplied by your slab rate, plus 4% cess. Example: ₹1.55 lakh across EPF, PPF, ELSS and insurance is capped at ₹1.5 lakh for 80C, and with ₹50,000 in NPS, ₹20,000 for your own health cover and ₹40,000 for senior-citizen parents, the allowed total is ₹2,60,000. At the 30% slab that saves ₹81,120.
The section numbers are the familiar ones. The Income-tax Act 2025, in force from 1 April 2026, renumbers them, so your tax return may show different numbers for the same deductions. The employer's NPS contribution under 80CCD(2) works in both regimes and is not included here. Surcharge is ignored. Rules and limits are those in force in October 2026; confirm with a tax professional before you invest only for tax saving. Use the old vs new regime guide or the income tax calculator to check which regime actually leaves you with less tax.
