How it's calculated

Kisan Vikas Patra is a savings certificate that doubles your money in a fixed period. The government sets the interest rate each quarter, compounded annually, and announces the matching doubling period — 115 months at 7.5%. Maturity value is exactly twice the amount invested, and the doubling period follows from the rate: months ≈ 12 × ln 2 ÷ ln(1 + rate).

Example: ₹1,00,000 invested at 7.5% becomes ₹2,00,000 after 115 months (9 years 7 months). A higher notified rate shortens that period; a lower one lengthens it.

The rate and doubling period are fixed for a certificate when you buy it. Minimum investment is ₹1,000 in multiples of ₹100, with no upper limit. There is no Section 80C benefit, and the interest is taxable. The table values are formula-based; the certificate itself pays exactly double at maturity.

Frequently asked questions

How long does KVP take to double my money?
At the 7.5% rate notified for the October–December 2026 quarter, KVP matures in 115 months — 9 years and 7 months. The doubling period is set by the government with each quarterly rate and is fixed for your certificate when you buy it.
Is KVP interest taxable?
Yes. The interest is taxable as income from other sources at your slab rate, there's no 80C deduction, and TDS is generally not deducted at source. Ask a tax professional when and how to report it for your situation.
Can I withdraw a KVP early?
Premature encashment is allowed after 2 years and 6 months. Before that, only in limited cases such as the holder's death or a court order. Values before maturity are lower than the doubled amount.
