Steel Weight Calculator

Find the weight of TMT reinforcement bars using the standard d²/162 formula. Choose a diameter, enter the length per bar and how many bars, and get the total weight — plus a kg-per-metre reference for every common size.

How it's calculated

A round steel bar's weight per metre is its diameter squared divided by 162 — a constant that bundles steel's density with the area of a circle when diameter is in mm and length in metres. Multiply by total length for the weight.

Weight (kg) = (d² ÷ 162) × total length in metres.

Frequently asked questions

Weight of a 12 mm bar?
0.888 kg/m, so a 12 m bar is about 10.7 kg.
Does this work for any diameter?
Yes — the d²/162 rule applies to all round TMT/mild-steel bars.
Is this the same as bar bending schedule weight?
It gives the unit and total weight; a full BBS also accounts for bends, hooks and laps in the cutting length.
