How it's calculated
The net wall area (after deducting openings) is multiplied by the number of coats, then divided by the paint's coverage per litre. Coverage is on the can; if you don't know it, 120 sq ft/litre/coat is a fair default for interior emulsion.
Litres = (wall area − openings) × coats ÷ coverage. Primer and putty are separate.

Frequently asked questions
Paint for a 10×10 room?
Walls are roughly 400 sq ft; at two coats and 120 sq ft/litre coverage, about 6.7 litres.
One coat or two?
Two over primer is standard; add a coat for dark colours or strong colour changes.
Does this include primer?
No — primer and putty are estimated separately; this covers the finish paint.
