How do I calculate flooring needed for a room?

Multiply the room length by its width to get the floor area, then add 5 to 10 percent for wastage from cuts and breakage. Multiply by the material rate per square foot for the cost.

How much wastage for flooring?

About 5 percent for a plain rectangular room and 10 percent or more for diagonal layouts, patterns or rooms with many cuts.

How many tiles do I need for flooring?

Divide the floor area (plus wastage) by the area of one tile. A 2×2 ft tile covers 4 square feet, so a 120 square-foot room needs about 33 tiles plus wastage.

Floor area is length × width (or your direct figure), increased by the wastage allowance for cuts and breakage. Cost is the area-with-wastage × your material rate. If you pick a tile size, the tile count is the area divided by one tile's area.
