Kisan Vikas Patra: Does Your Money Really Double?

By Paarth · Published 12 October 2026 · Updated 12 October 2026

Yes, a Kisan Vikas Patra pays exactly double your money at maturity, but how long that takes depends on the rate notified on the day you buy it. At 7.5%, which has been the rate for the October to December 2026 quarter, the wait is 115 months, or 9 years and 7 months. The doubling is real; whether it is a good deal depends on that wait and on tax.

How KVP works

You buy a certificate, starting at ₹1,000, with no upper limit, and receive double the amount when it matures. The government notifies the interest rate each quarter, compounded annually, along with the number of months it takes to double. Your certificate keeps the rate and period from the day you bought it, however the quarterly rate changes afterwards.

Why the waiting period moves

The doubling time is set by the rate, so a lower rate means a longer wait. These are the periods that have been notified over time:

You can estimate it yourself with the rule of 72: divide 72 by the rate, and 72 ÷ 7.5 is about 9.6 years, close to the official 9 years and 7 months.

What tax does to the doubling

KVP interest is taxable, there is no Section 80C deduction, and TDS is not normally deducted, so you need to report the interest yourself. Taxed at the 30% slab, a 7.5% return falls to a post-tax rate of roughly 5.2%, and at that rate doubling would take around 14 years instead of 9 years and 7 months. In a lower slab the effect is smaller, which is why KVP suits some investors much better than others.

Who it suits

It is a poor fit if you may need the money soon, or if you are in a high slab and could use a tax-free option such as PPF. Remember too that doubling is in nominal rupees: ₹2 lakh in nine and a half years buys less than ₹2 lakh does today, as our guide on how inflation erodes savings explains.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Kisan Vikas Patra take to double my money?
At the 7.5% rate notified for October to December 2026, a KVP matures in 115 months, which is 9 years and 7 months. The period is set by the government with each quarterly rate and is fixed for your certificate when you buy it.
Is KVP better than an FD?
It depends on the rate and your tax slab. KVP offers government backing and a fixed doubling, but its interest is taxable with no 80C benefit, so compare its post-tax return with an FD from a bank. The KVP calculator and the FD calculator let you do that.
Can I withdraw KVP before maturity?
Not in the first 2 years and 6 months, except in limited cases such as the holder's death or a court order. After that, early encashment is allowed but pays less than the full doubled amount.
